No KIDS CAMP at the BREAD & BUTTER
in January 2011

In January 2011, BREAD & BUTTER BERLIN will be taking place without the KIDS CAMP. The reason for this is the weak exhibitor response to the planned project. All registered exhibitors have already been informed about the decision. The affected exhibitors have, for the most part, expressed their disappointment, but can at the same time understand the decision.

The KIDS CAMP started at the BREAD & BUTTER in summer 2010 with an elaborate installation featuring original Roncalli circus tents. 45 brands and labels exhibited at the premiere, including successful and interesting brands such as Bengh per Principesse, Custo Growing, Desigual, Diesel Kid, Finger in the nose, Kaporal Junior, Naturino, Pepe Jeans Junior, Replay & Sons, Scotch R’belle, Scotch Shrunk, Tommy Hilfiger and Tumble’N Dry, to name just a few.

The premiere of the BREAD & BUTTER KIDS CAMP was judged successful by BREAD & BUTTER as extremely positive feedback was heard from the exhibitors, visitors and press. Many were impressed in particular by the combination of the KIDS CAMP with the BREAD & BUTTER and found the presentation to be unique. Building on the positive experience of the first event was of course the goal and the next logical step was to significantly increase the number of exhibitors for the event in January 2011.

But so far only around 40 labels and brands have confirmed their participation, including some new, smaller and very interesting collections. Many participants from the premiere event also confirmed that they would be attending again. However, several important brands have not yet confirmed or cancelled.

Although the submission of ‘late entry’ registrations is still expected, this would not leave sufficient time to motivate or mobilise the necessary international buyers to come and visit the KIDS CAMP in Berlin. Therefore, at this point, we can no longer assume that we would be able to create a strong event in January 2011, which would do justice to the BREAD & BUTTER and meet the standards of the kidswear industry.

Karl-Heinz Müller, managing director of BREAD & butter GmbH said: “BREAD & BUTTER has a huge significance for the entire Street- and Urbanwear industry in Europe. The BREAD & BUTTER has been an opinion leader for many years due to its extensive and unique exhibitor portfolio and the way in which the trade show is run. BREAD & BUTTER is an international meeting point for the industry, and a trend and mood barometer above and beyond the textile sector. BREAD & BUTTER has set standards. This is also our goal for the kidswear industry.

The existing kidswear trade fairs do not fulfil this claim, or it is not their goal. They are mostly of national or regional significance, without a strong infotainment element. I believe that it is high time for something new, something really international and something that combines business with pleasure.”

Karl-Heinz Müller continues: “Despite our cancellation for the January 2011 event I don’t want to turn my back on the subject of kidswear – I want to continue working on it, as I still believe in the project. However, I have to admit that some unfortunate errors were made. For example I cannot ignore the overlapping of our dates with the Pitti Bimbo, which is at present the biggest kidswear fair in Europe and the kick-off to the new season. The pricing, scheduling and the nature and location of the event all have to be reconsidered. As a result of many talks with kidswear experts, however, I have discovered that there is great dissatisfaction amongst the brands and retailers when it comes to trade fairs. I am confident that, in close cooperation with the kidswear sector, we can find a solution to this. The kidswear industry needs a strong platform in Central Europe, following the pattern of BREAD & BUTTER BERLIN.”

“At the end of November/beginning of December 2010 we will be presenting a revised concept at a convention in Berlin. We would like to invite the kidswear brands, agencies and retailers in question, as well as the trade press. Our aim is to hear as many opinions from the segment as possible, which we can incorporate into the project. We will announce the date soon and then send out invitations.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have supported our plan and apologise for any inconvenience. At the same time I would like to ask for your continued confidence in us, and hope you will join us again as part of our 10-year anniversary in summer 2011, with a modified kidswear concept full of energy and power.”

Karl-Heinz Müller is available for further information, interviews and talks.
